Your Tango Music Collection Part 2 by Donald Cooper

Your Tango Music Collection - Part 2 - by Donald Cooper

Now that you have some familiarity with the Big Four orchestras you will likely want to experience some of the other major orchestras of the period.  Our suggestion (Makela’s and I) is to now become familiar with Miguel Caló and his “Orchestra of the Stars” and his famous singers, Raúl Berón, Alberto Podestá and Jorge Ortiz.

Miguel Caló and Raúl Berón
CDs

There are very few CDs currently available containing Miguel Caló’s music.  The best of those that are available is:

Miguel Caló y su orquesta típica, Sus éxitos con Alberto Podestá, Jorge Ortiz y Raúl Berón on EMI - Reliquias (499969)

This CD contains 6 songs for each of their major singers, Raúl Berón, Alberto Podestá and Jorge Ortiz, plus 2 instrumentals.  Many high quality tracks here including:

Yo soy el Tango 1941 T

Percal 1943  T

Bajo un Cielo de Estrellas  1941 V

Ya sale el Tren  1943 T

Sans Souci  1944 T

La Abandoné y no sabía  1944 T

Unfortunately, on this CD we are missing “Al Compás del Corazón”, with Berón (1941) one of their biggest hits and still frequently played for dancing.

(Ideally, a CD that one should buy is Miguel Caló Al compás del corazón - EMI Reliquias (837413) which has 16 songs by Raúl Berón, including the title song, almost all top quality, but it is completely unavailable at present.)

Miguel Caló - Sus éxitos con Raúl Iriarte on EMI - Reliquias (495362)

This CD has 20 tunes from 1943 to 1945, all tangos and all featuring Raúl Iriarte.  It is currently available. The transfer quality of most of these tunes is good to very good.
Popular tracks on this CD include:

Nada  1944 T

La vi llegar  1944 T

Verdemar  1943 T

Después  1944 T

Marión  1943 T

This site offers free downloads (limited to 5 per week) of digital transfers of all the tunes from a very good album, which is not currently available in CD format, called Yo Soy el Tango  El Bandoneon EBCD-034).  There are 17 songs on Yo Soy el Tango, mostly from 1940s and a few later.  They are by Raúl Berón (2), Raúl Iriarte (2) and Alberto Podestá (8).  Popular songs include:

A digital version is available there of “Al Compás del Corazón”, on an album with a similar title but from a lesser known company “RHI bajo licencia THAI Records”;

Al compás del corazón / Miguel Caló y su orquesta / Cantan Raúl Berón Alberto Podestá.

This album has the same 13 songs by Raúl Berón as on the Reliquias CD above, plus 10 songs by Alberto Podestá.  Caveat: I cannot find a reference for the actual source or quality of these transfers.  Listen before downloading and use your own judgement.

The tracks on this album include:

Al Compás del Corazón  1941 T

Trasnochando  1942 T

Tristezas de la Calle Corrientes  1942 T

Tarareando  1942 T

Al compás del corazón / Miguel Caló y su orquesta / Cantan Raúl Berón Alberto Podestá is also available there from the same company, “RHI bajo licencia THAI Records”.

It seems Yo Soy el Tango is not available on iTunes. But keep trying… maybe they will add it at some point.

Both albums Yo Soy el Tango and Al compás del corazón / Miguel Caló y su orquesta / Cantan Raúl Berón Alberto Podestá are available there, as well as by single tunes.
