Your Tango Music Collection - Part 5 - by Donald Cooper

Your Tango Music Collection - Part 5

The orchestra featured in this posting is Enrique Rodriguez y su Orquesta.  On the album covers of these CDs you may notice that this orchestra is not identified as “su orquesta tipica”, but instead as “su orquesta”.  According to Ricardo Blaya at Todo Tango, the Enrique Rodriguez Orchestra: “. . . was christened “an orchestra of all rhythms” which also played foxtrots, rancheras, pasodobles, polkas for the dancing public which didn’t just tango.  His style was a breakthrough for the groups of the period, because he played all kinds of genres, introduced miscellaneous instruments and his repertoire, always assorted, only included merry or romantic tunes.”  In other words this was an ‘orquesta caracteristica’ or featured orchestra. “But when he played tango, you heard the brilliant sound of a well-rehearsed orchestra, with simple nice arrangements and also with very good vocalists.”  However, for our purposes, we are interested in their recordings of tangos, vals and milongas.
